Harvesting Herbs For Tea

Updated: Nov 16

Harvesting tea, especially herbal tea, requires careful timing and handling to preserve the medicinal properties and flavors of the herbs.

At Carolina Holistic Tea Farm, here’s how we approach the process:

1. Timing the Harvest:

The first key step in harvesting herbs for tea is timing. Different herbs have different optimal harvest times depending on the part of the plant being used. Leaves are typically harvested just before the plant flowers, when the concentration of essential oils and medicinal properties is at its peak. Flowers, on the other hand, are harvested as they begin to bloom, while roots are often harvested in the fall when the plant's energy is stored in the root system.

2. Hand-Harvesting:

To ensure quality, we harvest all of our herbs by hand. This allows us to carefully select the healthiest plants and avoid damaging them during the process. Hand-harvesting also ensures that we only take what we need from each plant, allowing the plant to continue growing and thriving.

3. Harvesting at the Right Time of Day:

We typically harvest herbs in the morning, after the dew has dried but before the heat of the day causes the essential oils in the plants to dissipate. This helps to preserve the full potency of the herbs, ensuring that the final tea blends are rich in flavor and medicinal value.

4. Air Drying:

Once harvested, the herbs are carefully dried to preserve their natural properties. At Carolina Holistic Tea Farm, we use air drying methods to gently dehydrate the herbs without damaging their potency. The herbs are spread out on screened trays in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, which can degrade the delicate oils and active compounds. This slow drying process can take anywhere from a few days to a week, depending on the herb.

5. Processing and Blending:

Once the herbs are dried, they are hand-crushed or gently processed to maintain their natural integrity. For our teas, we blend various herbs in specific combinations to create balanced flavors and health benefits. Each blend is crafted with intention, ensuring that every batch is a perfect mix of taste and function.

6. Storage:

After the herbs are processed, they are stored in glass jars to preserve freshness until they are ready to be packaged and sold. Proper storage is essential for maintaining the herbs' quality, as exposure to light, air, and moisture can degrade their potency over time.

At Carolina Holistic Tea Farm, we believe that every step of the process—from the planting of the seeds to the moment the tea reaches your cup—should be handled with care. This ensures that each tea blend tastes great but also delivers the maximum health benefits nature has to offer.
